프랑스의 햇살은 그 특유의 자연스러운 필터감이 있다. 뉴욕이나 서울의 햇살이 형광등 같이 그 아래 모든것을 극명히 보여준다고 하면 프랑스의 그것은 백열등같다. 심지어 한여름 프로방스의 뜨거운 햇살도 노르망디의 구름 사이 잠깐 나온 햇살도. 간결한 선체의 김홍도가 그 시기 프랑스에 있었다면 강렬한 색감의 고흐체 그림을 그렸을지도 모른다.
